I had a pleasant drive from Lixouri to the village of Manzavinata where I found the access road leading to Xi beach at the southern end of Paliki peninsula of Kefalonia.

Xi (pronounced zee) is famous for the dark red, volcanic sand on its beach. Along with the strange, grey alluvial deposits that make up the cliffs above the beach which characterises the landscape here, this gives Xi a unique look.

Xi is most definitely a resort rather than a true village, although it has a pleasant feel to it. The sea here is shallow and warm, a perfect place to soak up the sun and swim. There is a four kilometre long expanse of sand up to 50 metres wide with plenty of room to find your own space.

I don't think I have ever felt sand as soft as it is here . . . absolutely wonderful!
